Color and Style
Find the tool most suited to each of the following tasks:
Include the name, an image and safety considerations for each tool.
Marking a stitching line on an unusually shaped cushion.-Dressmaker's chalk, marking pens and pencils
2. Cutting an embroidery thread. -Dressmaker's Shears/scissors. 3. Hand-sewing a button to a shirt. -Needle 4. Unpicking stitches sewn in the incorrect position. -Unpicker 5. Holding 2 pieces of fabric together while you are sewing. -Pins
Needle
Wear a thimble on your thumb to avoid stabbing yourself on your fingers.
Dressmaker's Shear/scissors
When you are holding the scissors, hold the scissors with the pointy part pointing downwards, just in case you fall and then accidentally stab yourself, or even someone else.
Pins
Watch where you are sticking the pins into the fabric, always keep an eye on the pin when you are pushing it into the fabric.
Dressmaker's chalk, marking pens and scissors
Mark what you want your cushion to look like before you start to cut
Unpicker
Be careful not to cut yourself on the finger or hand with the blade of the unpicker. Don't put your face so close to the unpicker while you are unpicking, because you might stab yourself in the face when you are trying to unpick, because you might push too hard with the unpicker.
Textile Techniques
For you to do in your wikifolio
Conduct your own research on textile manufacturing and decoration techniques, as well as completing samples in class time.
Include all of your research in your wikifolio.
Evaluate each technique and it's suitability to be used on your project.
You may like to include photographs of the samples you complete in class time, as well as construction steps or any other information you see as important.
You may use techniques we do not cover in class time, such as; beading, cording, fabric paints, sequins, buttons etc.
EMBROIDERY- Embroidering is decorating the fabric with needle and thread. There is a lot of embroidery stitches. Such asCounted-thread embroidery- which is decorating the fabrics with clear visible warp and weft threads.
PATCHWORK-Patchwork is when irregular pieces of fabric are sewn together. It is decorated with embroidery, lace, beads... Luxury fabrics, velvet, silk, or any with interesting surface could be used.
TIE DYING- A reason to tie-dye is that it makes each garment of piece of cloth a small, neat bundle--much easier to handle if you have a lot to do. If you don't tie, but just apply the dye directly, you need more space and can do fewer garments or pieces of fabric at a time.
SEQUINS-Sequins are commonly used on clothing, jewelry, bags and other accessories. Large sequins, fastened only at the top, have been used on billboards and other signage.
